  • John McMaster

    Director

    John has over 30 years experience in the Accounting profession, having commenced work in 1989 while studying his Bachelor of Business (Accountancy) degree – he qualified in 1992 and obtained his Tax Agent Registration in 1993. He has been a member of the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) since May 1993, and is a Fellow of the Institute.

    Over those 30 years, there have been many changes to how people interact with their Accountant, but John believes a strong relationship with clients is vital to getting the best outcomes.  When he knows you well, he understands what makes you tick, and what things will work for you, your family and your business. Being approachable, honest, and striving to always put his clients first are things that are important to John.

    John is a charter member of the Rotary Club of Woombye Palmwoods and enjoys being able to give back to his community through various activities throughout the year.

    John was born and raised here on the Sunshine Coast, and whilst originally moving away after finishing school to work in several industries, he returned to take up his Accounting studies in 1989.

    He and his wife Jackie met at university, moving permanently back to the Coast in 1992. They have four grown sons and enjoy spending their weekends with friends and family.

  • Ivan de Wet

    Director

    Ivan has been working as Taxation Accountant since November 2009, joining the MdW Accountants (formerly McMaster & Associates) team in 2014. Prior to that, Ivan worked for a number of years in rural Queensland where he acquired an appreciation for life in the country and the ups and downs Primary Producers face.

    Ivan accepted an offer of partner in 2021, and together with John, is looking forward to providing clients with the personalised service and support our firm is known for.

    Ivan has owned his own successful business and believes this has assisted him in understanding client needs and the challenges business owners face.

    In other roles Ivan has gained experience in the areas of Financial Management and Human Resources. He enjoys working in the business advisory space and using his own experiences to assist our clients to reach their full business potential.

    Ivan is our SMSF administration leader, which involves liaising with clients and their Financial Advisors to ensure all compliance matters are handled in a timely manner, whilst working together to achieve the best outcomes for clients.

    Ivan’s friendly and dry sense of humour keeps the team on their toes, and he is always up for a bit of office banter.

    Ivan and his wife Natasja, along with their two teenage children enjoy living on the Sunshine Coast, having found their piece of paradise. Outside of work, Ivan enjoys playing golf, stand up paddle boarding, swimming and spending time with his family.

  • Annette Koch

    Director

    Annette is the Founder and Principal of Annette Koch Accountants. Annette has over 40 years’ experience working in public practice accounting, of which 36 years has been on the Sunshine Coast. Annette loves the challenge of strategic business planning, with a focus on tax minimisation (not tax evasion) and asset protection.

    Annette enjoys the long-term relationships she has with all her clients, many having Annette as their accountant for a few decades.

    The personal approach Annette takes with every new business client is evident with her “no obligation” guarantee offered in the first meeting. For Annette, it is all about helping her clients (who have different requirements) improve and grow. That has been her motivation in all these years in practice.

    Annette and her husband Robert have 4 sons and, on the weekends, Annette can be busy catching up with their family (including 2 grandsons) and occasionally going fishing with Robert.

  • Brett Newton

    Senior Accountant

    Prior to completion of a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Accounting) at USQ, Brett had spent over 16 years in the retail sector specialising in the hardware and automotive industries.

    Brett brings that experience to the public accounting sector and this means he has a complete understanding of client needs.

    Growing up on the Darling Downs with a direct connection to primary production, he empathises with the struggles and pressure of farming and is passionate for a return to major primary production in Australia.

    Brett brings a long-lasting working relationship built on mutual trust and respect. He listens to the needs of our clients, provides exceptional service and has a great attention to detail.

    Brett and his wife Fay moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2003 with their three children and they now have two grandchildren who keep everyone very busy and entertained.

    Brett enjoys mountain biking and when he gets the time, hitting the dirt trails on his Enduro Bike. He loves camping, is an avid vinyl collector and a passionate Queensland Maroon supporter. He supports many variants of sports, particularly motor racing but most of all, is a family man who loves spending time with his family.

  • Annette Buchanan

    Accountant/Bookkeeper

    Annette operated a retail/wholesale business for over 10 years and as such has a clear understanding of what it takes to cope with the day to day running of a business including staffing issues.

    Following from that she has worked in the accounting industry for many years in varying capacities including accounting, bookkeeping and training.

    Annette holds a Diploma of Accounting and is a registered BAS Agent in her own right.

    She loves to travel and is an avid walker.

  • Leigh Bredhauer

    Accountant/Bookkeeper

    Leigh has been with MdW Accountants (McMasters) since 2017 and loves working in such a positive and supportive environment.  Prior to obtaining a Dual Certificate IV in Bookkeeping & Accounting and becoming a registered BAS agent, she managed a not-for-profit community service for 10 years with a team of 16 people so has a good understanding of HR matters and payroll, plus many years’ experience with all aspects of bookkeeping.  Leigh loves helping businesses move away from being completely stressed about their accounts, and to:

    • build efficient and user-friendly processes;
    • ensure accounts are up-to-date and accurate;
    • ensure compliance with all lodgement obligations;
    • produce meaningful financial reports to assist with business decision making.

    Leigh and her husband live on acreage with their two dogs, enjoy growing their own fruit and vege and making the most of our coastal lifestyle; beach, national parks, rainforests, beautiful!

    Leigh says the best compliment she has received from a satisfied client was ‘you make it easier to spend time with my family’.

  • Melinda Caldwell

    Practice Manager

    Melinda has been with Annette Koch Accountants since it began in 2011 and now merging with the team at MdW Accountants. She has been providing exceptional customer service and taking the time to get to know our clients personally.

    Melinda has many years of experience in administration, accounts, personal assistant, payroll, bookkeeping, assisting with ASIC obligations, liaising with ATO on behalf of our clients and enjoys working closely with the team to ensure our client’s needs are met.

    Melinda and her husband live on acreage and enjoy spending time at home on their property with their adult son, granddaughter, family and friends and going away camping.

  • Jackie McMaster

    Admin Manager

    Jackie has been working with John in the business since 1995. She took time out to raise their four boys and returned to take up the Admin Manager role in 2011. She enjoys a friendly chat to catch up with all our clients’ news whenever our clients are in the office, or on the phone.

    She loves to help clients feel at ease so that preparing their tax paperwork doesn’t feel so daunting.

    Jackie has been involved in many committees over the years – from soccer clubs to kindergartens and school carnival planning committees and was awarded a life membership to Nambour Wildcats Soccer Club for her contribution to the growth of the club.

    Jackie was born and raised here on the Sunshine Coast, and outside of the office, Jackie enjoys reading, linedancing and watching sport – especially her boys playing football – the round ball variety!

    Jackie and John have been married for over 30 years, and this business, and the clients are a big part of their lives.

  • Jessica Jolly

    Admin Assistant

    Alongside the other administration staff, Jess helps our practice to flow smoothly as she takes care of our administration side of things. Jess understands the importance of listening to our clients and their needs and is always quick to help them in any way she can.

    With her youthful perspective, Jess is always bringing in new ideas and constantly looks for ways to improve our client’s experience when dealing with our office. Jess also has very good skills when it comes to computer technology.

    Jess keeps busy on the weekends by spending time with her family and friends. Any chance Jess has, she’s straight down to the beautiful beaches we have here locally on the Coast.
